The carmaker was looking for “significant improvements in efficiency and production capacity” at its plant in Portugal with the installation of a new blanking line, according to João Carrilho, Automation Specialist in Maintenance Engineering Stamping at Volkswagen Autoeuropa. The priority was to incorporate “highly productive equipment capable of handling different production demands.” The new blanking line was to be characterized by its “versatility to adapt to different types of products and ensure efficient production”.
The biggest challenge was probably the efficient integration of the blanking line into the existing production plan, minimizing downtime and production interruptions.
SOLUTION
The blanking line features a high-performance leveller with 2 cassettes to ensure maximum flatness across varying thicknesses and belt hardness. Its advanced automation enables nearly all operations to run automatically, maximizing efficiency, productivity, and operator safety. The ability to offer customized solutions tailored to specific needs was one of the main features for opting for Fagor Arrasate for the project, as Carrilho points out.
A standout feature is the 2-station electromagnetic stacker, designed for high flexibility. It accommodates both small parts, with multi-stacking in different directions, and large parts up to 4,100 mm, offering versatility for various sizes and materials. Volkswagen Autoeuropa valued Fagor Arrasate’s ability to deliver customized solutions tailored to their specific production needs.

Close support and collaboration with the OEM made it possible to shape a tailor-made project to suit their needs. “Fagor Arrasate’s experience played a crucial role in the design and implementation of the project, providing expertise and customized solutions,” highlights Carrilho.
A project of this size has high coordination requirements to avoid disrupting the plant’s operation and production.
RESULTS
In the end, the new blanking line project “successfully achieved the initial goals of productivity, versatility, and reliability".
