Society as a whole has become aware of the importance of reducing its energy consumption, of minimising contamination, and of ensuring the Earth’s future sustainability. In this setting, and as a driving force behind progress and the guardian of ecology, industry has much to say and do. Thus arises the concept of “Green Manufacturing”, a metaphor which calls for us to develop more efficient, less contaminating equipment, machines and processes, with low consumption and which respect the environment. Being “green” is a need which also requires companies to demonstrate a proactive attitude to the society in which they operate.
Fagor Arrasate has enthusiastically embraced this commitment to ensure that its machines are energetically optimal, environmentally friendly and suitable for materials and processes which make it possible to curb consumption and emissions. This issue of our journal features some of the developments on which Fagor Arrasate is currently working to put “Green Manufacturing” into practice.
Thus, for example, we report on the company’s participation in the European ADVANCRTM project, which seeks to develop the CRTM manufacturing process to produce extremely light but highly resistant carbon fibre components, with a view to significantly reducing the consumption of vehicles. In the same sector, another article deals with the new presses for HCl composites, optimised for this kind of work, and which enable energy savings of up to 35%, with much lower space requirements.
The article on “Green Press Technology” reports on a number of important breakthroughs with regard to reducing consumption in the setting of stamping presses. These include the mechanical servo-cushion, the hydraulic ECO-Cushion and various development and simulation systems, such as the ServoPress Configurator and Synchro 3D. All of these developments mean that Fagor Arrasate machines guarantee a minimal energy footprint and significant savings in investment owing to their high efficiency.
We also review Stacking 4.0, the new range of stackers designed to work with different types of materials, configured to guarantee high levels of flexibility in stacking and which guarantee much lower energy consumption, with reductions of up to 80% in vacuum stackers.
Truly important is the launch of ECOPICKLEAN, the first acid-free pickling line. This is a success story which clearly shows Fagor Arrasate’s leading position in the sheet-metal processing sector. This ecological pickling system requires no water or acids, and constitutes a major step forward in our ecological commitment.
Equally important is the development of the world’s first facility for hot stamping, which uses a servo press with SPT technology and offers significant advantages over conventional hydraulic press installations.
Lastly, Fagor Arrasate has not overlooked improvements to ergonomics, to ensure that operators work under safer conditions. We showcase the new press with 180º tilting slide installed in the California plant of one the world’s leading electrical automobile manufacturers, thereby uniting the ecological product of the future with the ecological machines to manufacture them.
